Teachers Week

theatre class

Roy Hart Theatre Teachers Week – 22 – 26 March 2016

34 Roy Hart Theatre teachers, 7 residents of Malérargues and members of the board met for 5 days of exchange and Singing.

The 41 people were from 16 countries (South America and Europe) coming together for very lively and fruitful meetings unlike anything that has happened before.

The days were filled with classes of all kinds, teaching each other, body work, voice exploration, songs, improvisation, sometimes altogether, sometimes in small groups and individual work.

theatre class

Each evening there were performances:

“Moving octaves” by Susanne Weins and Saso Vollmeier,

“Cheers Dylan”, a reading by Clara Silber-Harris and Paul Silber,

“Je ne suis pas née pour devenir squelette” by Michèle Laforet and

“Generation” with Saso Vollmeier, Marianne Letron, David Goldsworthy, Saule Ryan, Carol Mendelsohn, Kaya Anderson and Ian Magilton.

There were lectures and talks about Alfred Wolfsohn, Roy Hart and us, about the future of Malérargues, the future of our work and the possibilities for the continuity of the various pathways in our work.

The spirit of this gathering was full of joy, of hearing our voices together, of moving and being moved by each other.

To be continued…..

Generation

A few veteran ‘voice savages’ of Roy Hart Theatre meet a young composer/pianist. The young musician composes and arranges for them and tames them a little – song, musique, poetry, improvisation and action are woven around the theme of listening. Music theatre, young at heart gives a lesson in imagination that is sentimental, funny, tragic, scary, heroic and always touching”.

Generation tours

brighter-poster4web

Generation-poster4webThe Roy Hart International Arts Centre has not received any aid from the Culture Ministries for more than twenty years, but thanks to the generosity and hard work of its members and despite several severe crises, it survives very well, thank you very much! Our biggest loss in these years was  not being able to tour our performances. But now we are proud to announce that Génération, our biggest performance since Moby Dick, will begin touring in 2016!
Génération emerges from Sašo Vollmaier’s work as accompanist and musical guide to founding members of Roy Hart Theatre – “Because they are such special people” People who came from London to Malérargues in 1974 and who work there still. A whole generation! !
This is what Midi Libre says about it: “Surprising, mystical, jubilant, scary, joyful, bluffing, harmonious, dissonant, gliding, hilarious, disquieting, touching, violent, pleasurable, tender… In perfect harmony and complicity, the result of many years together, bringing rigour and depth and a large dash of improvisation, these sixty, seventy and octogenarians gave us a lesson in youth and fantasy”. See a short ‘taster’ of Génération here.  Contact: e-mail

Reading/performance, “Faces give away their secrets in the dark” in Lasalle

A New Generation

There are four of us who appear in both photographs and two that arrived shortly after yhe first. With help of the Slovenian composer, Saso Vollmaier (top centre with glasses) and without the help of La DRAC, they have created our biggest show since “Moby Dick” – “Generation”. In a formula of mixed workshop and performances that we hope to tour in 2016 – and beyond!

New Dance Floor

Studio Theatre Malérargues
Studio Theatre Malérargues

Studio Theatre Malérargues

We are proud of what we have achieved at Malérargues over the last twenty years without public funding, but we are equally proud that every year whenever their finances permitted, our local commune of Thoiras has managed to give us ‘something’. This year they are contributing to a new floor for the Studio Theatre.

The Studio theatre was converted from the ruins of a ‘magnanerie’ in 1974 for the first rehearsals of ‘L’Economiste’, though the floor at that time was still almost mud! There have been many ‘economic’ floor solutions since, but now the support of Thoiras allows us to install a high-quality dance surface there. Ready for the season of 2016.

Inaugural Intern Residency at Malérargues March 2015

IMG_5126

IMG_5126

Eight artists are giving their time and work to the windows and the gardens of Malérargues and in exchange ten senior teachers are offering their own special view of our work in daily classes. This experimental project is in the context of the essential Roy Hart Theatre principle that ‘there should be no division between art and life’.

We hope that it will be the first of a regular programme of studies engaging the question of how to take the deep personal research and freedom of Roy Hart Theatre work into professional performance.
