We will work on the voice in characters and scenes, both humourous and dramatic, from Euripide ‘The Bacchae’ and other authors, in song, arias, poetry, stories and language. Please bring a chosen song and text learned by heart. The lessons include exercises and explorations of the voice, body, and breathing. These are based on the experience of many years of research, teaching, performing and directing in the Roy Hart Theatre and on techniques found in Yoga, Tai Chi, Chi Gong and other vocal and physical disciplines that aim to increase your capacity to achieve relaxation and tonicity, which are vital elements in singing, speaking, and reciting. The work includes individual and group lessons, improvisations with encouragement to develop these towards interpretation or to simply continue exploring. We will also do ensemble work on extracts from a play by Shakespeare and sing polyphonic songs of different countries. In addition there will be evenings of singing and presentation of work in progress, listening to audio/visual recordings and discussion of relevant experiences. This workshop is for you if you wish to improve and discover a wider range and more expressive voice in speaking and singing which you can use to enhance your all-round capacity to communicate and enjoy transforming and regenerating your voice, mind, and body.

After her studies at the Conservatory of Amsterdam (A.Bijlsma) she moved to Italy, where she worked at S.Cecilia Symphonic Orchestra (Rome). Further on she collaborated with various baroque and classical chamberorchestras (Italy, Austria), concerting throughout Europe and Japan.
She has worked with musicians like Fabio Biondi, Alfredo Bernardini, Kees Boeke, G.Letzbor (Ars Antiqua Austria) in both concerts and recordings.
She was invited as a guest teacher at various baroquemusic seminars (Italy).
Since 1988 she is member of Tripla Concordia, playing the baroquecello both as soloist and as continuoplayer. With this ensemble she appeared on radio and television in several countries of the European Union and performed at major music festivals both in Italy and abroad, such as Musica e Poesia a S. Maurizio in Milan, the Schlosskonzerte in Salzburg (Austria), the Festival Internacional de Musica Antigua de Daroca (Spain), the Music Weeks at the Cité de la Musique de Paris (France), Haendel Festival in Halle (Germany). With Tripla Concordia she made a number of recordings, which have earned international recognition (Stradivarius, Dynamic, Nuova Era, Philharmonia, Cantus (Spain), Brilliant (Belgium).
From 1990 till 1999 she participated regularly in music-theatre productions (solo-cello and performing-arts).
In 2002 she founded the ensemble AlmaTéssara (PianoTrio and Voice), dedicated to chambermusic of the 19th and 20th century, with special attention to woman composers and the creation of multidimensional performances (Widmer-Switserland/Brasil).
In 2011 she founded String Trio Mizar, together with Renata Lacko (violin) and Carmelo Giallombardo (viola). This same year she recorded a cycle of Vivaldi Sonatas with Tripla Concordia.
Currently she is training as a Choir Conducter at the Fondazione Guido d’Arezzo School of Choir Conducting.
Since 2006 she has been a coordinator and teacher for the Music Program at the Accademia dell’Arte in collaboration with Furman University (South Carolina, US).
More recently her responsibilities include assisting in the administrative direction of the Master of Fine Arts

Jazz singer Anne Hartkamp has been in close touch with the Roy Hart Theatre work ever since participating in her first seminars with Paul and Clara Silber in 1997 and, later on, with Jonathan Hart-Makwaia. One of the better known singers on the German jazz scene, she can be heard on numerous CDs, including some as a composer and band leader. Apart from her intense song interpretations, her trademark is a playful, instrumental and improvisational approach to the voice. Anne Hartkamp teaches jazz singing at the University for Applied Sciences in Osnabrueck, Germany.

Travaille avec la Cie des Rivages de Toulouse et participe à des soirées improvisations Clown avec les MARIENEZ de la Cie du Morse dans le Tarn.

Stage exclusivement en français

Objectif du stage : Travailler la voix et expérimenter l’enrichissement réciproque des spécificités du conte et du clown par des improvisations et exercices. D’une part, un apport d’imaginaire, de merveilleux, d’un fil narratif pour l’écriture du clown. De l’autre un apport de fantaisie, de poésie et d’émotion pour le récit du conteur. Chacun pourra ensuite selon son objectif faire servir le conte au clown ou le clown au conte.

Horaires et emploi du temps du stage : Le stage durera du mardi 28 octobre à 14 h au samedi 1er novembre à 22 h. Nous travaillerons tous les jours de mardi à vendredi de 14 h à 20 h avec deux temps exceptionnels.
Le samedi nous ferons une longue journée de 9 h à 22 h avec une pause pour déjeuner et un repas au restaurant pour finir le stage.
Mercredi de 10h à 12 h à Alès : Un événement hors les murs : Conférence de Marc Aubaret sur le thème « passage entre les mondes » et Visite du Centre Méditerranéen de Littérature Orale, où vous découvrirez les richesses du catalogue et des collections audio et vidéo. www.euroconte.org

Pré-requis : Expérience préalable en conte ou en clown souhaitée mais pas indispensable. Le conte et le clown peuvent être aussi des supports pour travailler la prise de parole en public.

Chaque participant doit venir avec :
- Un conte qui lui plait choisi dans ou hors de la thématique, d’une durée de 5 min à la lecture à voix haute.. Cette contrainte de 5 min permet à la fois de travailler sur un conte entier et d’éviter de trop longs temps d’écoute. Ce conte servira au travail collectif et il vaut mieux ne pas trop le travailler en amont.
- Une chanson sue par cœur (même approximativement) pour l’atelier clown.
- Il est préférable de venir avec son nez rouge.
Thématique indicative : La nuit du 31 octobre était chez les celtes la dernière nuit de l’année, une nuit de magie où les morts revenaient sur terre sous la forme d’esprits. Les revenants, les morts, le cimetière, le passage entre les mondes, les fées, toutes ces thématiques sont bienvenues pour choisir votre conte. Elles seront travaillées dans l’idée du trouble qu’elles inspirent ou de la peur qu’elles suscitent ou de la drôlerie qui s’en dégage. Si cette thématique ne vous inspire pas, vous pouvez librement choisir ce qui vous convient. L’important est que le conte choisi vous plaise.

Le Conte
Contenu de l’atelier « Conte» : échauffement corps et voix : relaxation, souplesse, imagination. timbres, projection, émotions, personnages. Trame narrative. Mise en scène de la parole.
Conter, c’est mettre son corps en scène, sa voix, ses gestes, dans le plus souvent, une absence de décors. C’est une présence théâtrale au plus près du quotidien. Comment « travailler » ce « naturel » ? Un naturel qui justement doit fabriquer du
merveilleux avec du « presque-rien » de mise en scène ? C’est ce que nous verrons.
Conter, c’est aussi accorder de l’importance qu texte pour qu’il présente la narration sans « sentir le papier ». C’est écrire de l’oral à partir de l’imprimé. C’est retrouver le rythme. C’est naviguer sur la crête du répété et de l’improvisé dans un équilibre virtuose et masqué. C’est ce que nous travaillerons.
Conter, c’est enfin accorder une attention toute particulière au public, le sentir, lui répondre. C’est quitter son conte un instant pour dialoguer et reprendre ensuite le fil de l’histoire pour le dérouler jusqu’à son terme en faisant vibrer la voix du conteur et celle de ses personnages. Nous nous y emploierons tout au long du travail vocal et du travail narratif.

Le Clown
Contenu de l’atelier « Clown » : échauffement collectif. improvisations clown avec nez, costumes et accessoires. passages solo, à deux et à plusieurs
Personnage tendre, poétique, affectif pour qui les émotions sont de vraies nourritures et l’imaginaire une aventure quotidienne. Cet être, vit en chacun de nous, il ne demande qu’à être éveillé, sollicité, pour venir nous rendre cette part d’enfance et d’humanité.

C’est à travers les jeux collectifs, corporels et les improvisations que nous le voyons surgir et retrouver toute sa vitalité, et sa générosité. Tenter cette aventure, c’est aller à la recherche de notre créativité, de nos rires, de nos fantaisies, pour les savourer et les donner.
Clown et conteur font face à des problèmes identiques : s’adresser directement au public, libérer une parole authentique, vivante, spontanée, s’adresser à la part d’enfance, celle qui en nous crée, divertit, jaillit, subvertit et met en ordre. Le clown ouvre la voie au conteur.

Roy Hart Voice Work is characterised by its non-judgemental way of exploring the voice as the phenomenon of human sounding. It has roots in the body, in movement and breathing, and also in the imagination, with its sense of structure in archetypes.

Noah Pikes will lead you along a creative path through these shared roots of the human voice, towards its branches and flowers found in the unique qualities of each individual voice, where the magic of speaking, singing, theatre and sound improvisations are to be found.
Many of the elements of The Human Voice workshops are included, as well as other elements drawn from the long research of RHT. Participants are encouraged to bring a memorised text and/or song with which to work.

After graduating from Mozarteum, Salzburg 1983, I worked as actress and singer for more than 10 years in german theatres. During that time I also extensively trained in “Method-Acting” , Lee Strasberg’s explorative body-mind training for performers. In 1993 the Roy-Hart-Voice-Work found me through Clara and Paul Silber and I have been working and living with this vision for voice and human beings ever since. I am teaching voice and acting since the early nineties aiming at supporting people to unfold their creative powers. Happily married to Ralf Peters we co founded “KörperschafftKlang”, a voice-theatre-company with its seat in Köln, where we live. In my capacity as a buddhist meditation teacher I am using voice and bodywork as a medium on that path of liberation as well.

(This workshop is open to all who have attended a Roy Hart voice workshop.) Content : The K’A of Love is an roaming cabaret – songs, texts, theatre, stage performances – is especially designed and tailored to Malerargues’s theatrical location and atmosphere. This fascinating “scene” is rich with personal and collective history; its rugged and also soothing surroundings inspire, spur and challenges our creativity. A creative and pleasurable experience, a polyphonic burst of languages geared to re-invent the world of the cabaret and its theatrical space. Le K’A OF LOVE/AMOUR/ AMOR/AMORE/LJUBAV/LIEBEN Dramaturgical play of languages around a universal theme The theme of both K’A will be LOVE, articulated in all its forms and manifestations, which will give us a wealth of texts and songs and will inspire unrestrained performances of both a comical and tragical nature. My interest in this journey is above all to integrate the languages that relate to the theme love in different musicality, rythms, colours, timber and imagination. In the singing repertory, different styles will meet in a kind of baroque melodrama that will go through the classical and contemporary repertories (songs, jazz and musicals, folk songs etc.) and will include personal compositions. We will used texts in the original language: a journey between classical writings and contemporary (theatrical repertory, poems, correspondence, literary extracts of different kinds), also including personal contributions. Participants’s skills will be taken into consideration during performances and improvisations. ********* Timetable First week – we will work on our repertory (texts, songs and performances) which will give us the main path for our playwriting/play acting. Second week – we will work on interpretation and will define the stage setting for our roaming cabaret with the help of Annette Mengel, a pianist and composer in on her own rights who has extensive experience in the field of vocal writing and accompaniment, see her resume. First week Afternoon: 14h00 to 17h00 – small groups and individual work. Our objective is to question and explore the relationship between body and voice with regard to vocal techniques, imagination and improvisation. Collective warm-up and intensive work on breathing, its technique and volume, its relationship between body and space. This will be followed by singing lessons at the piano, in the Roy Hart Theatre tradition, with the four participating professors. The Evening: 17h30 to 20h30 –workshop: We will take the time to experience the stage – feel it with body and voice as a whole : personal interpretation of a song, or a text, or create a vocal work based on improvisation. Painting reproductions from the exhibition NY 2013, “Love, War and Exile” by Marc Chagall, will be a source for improvisation. Second week Afternoons : 14h00 – 17h00 Work in groups and individually. We will explore further the relationship between body and voice with regard to vocal techniques, imagination and improvisation. Individual singing lessons at the piano will follow. Evenings : 17h30 – 20h30 * A. Interpretation workshop using the space: individual lesson with a pianist. — Diction, articulation, modulation and rythm of the speaking voice. — Expression projection and direction of the voice: presence, space and economy of silence. — Personal interpretation of a song or creation of an original vocal work based on improvisation. * B. ‘Bound your eyes and move, hold your ears and sound’ —your intuition will lead you to new shores of expression by respecting your impulses as a world of creative energies. To discover, to follow up and to lead these energies into musical and danceable context will be the aim of our voice/dance cooperation. The workshop includes intense bodywork like floor work, aspects of BMC* and Contact dance*. Breathing and sounding will be a special focus during the Movement class. It will be part of the Basics for the Roy Hart Voice Work, Group Ateliers and the Individual Voice Research. A condensed contemporary choreography at the final day, will offer the space to present your improvised musical mood, or your interpreted song in physical engagement. This workshop is open to all people who would love to express ‘voice in dance’ and ‘dance in voice’ also without previous experience.

The voice is an amazing tool, capable of diving to the depths or driving us to ever dizzying heights. The Cello is an instrument that sings, that vibrates nerves and bones, that , by its mix of woods and strings, pierces and radiates through us. Bringing these two elements together in a workshop is not just an empty challenge, but is a real encouragement, an invitation, to dive deeper into the subtle alchemy of sound, word and musical gesture.

Moments of collective work alternate with small group classes, that heighten our listening powers and bring into play voice and cello, an essential and éloquent partner.

Based upon the actor’s discipline of effective, engaging, and heightened communication, this workshop, focuses on the person as a communicator addressing voice, body, heart, spirit, imagination, and emotion. Participants develop their natural ability to express feeling, inspire others, and build trust among teams.

Participants learn powerful language, active listening, how to give and receive feedback, empathy towards others and presentation skills. Through the programme, effective communication and compelling dialogue become intrinsic life skills.

The Skills

The actor has to be clear on the meaning of the text, so that it will come across to the audience. They have to use their voices with enough volume and colour to ensure the audience will listen and also behave in a way that supports their words, as well as having the self-confidence to face the audience and be able to improvise – to think and act quickly under pressure – if something unexpected happens.

All these ‘actor’ skills are also required by business people, and, indeed, anyone who is required to address an audience. The audience may be one person, a group meeting, or a large corporate gathering

Storytelling is also an essential aspect of the work. Everyone has stories which are gathered from their life experiences. The connection between one person and another, between a presenter and the audience, is firmly established by the telling of a personal story.

Ivan Midderigh

A founder member of the Roy Hart theatre and senior facilitator for Corporate Scenes since 1992, Ivan has led seminars with wit and style for major international companies including AT&T, Pacific Bell, Nortel Networks, The Gap, Sandia National Lab, Levi Strauss, MacKinsey and Co, is a guest lecturer at The Olin School of Business at Washington University, St Louis, and is senior faculty with the annual Executive Coaching Institute at the Center for Executive Education, University California Berkeley Haas School of Business.

He also spent 5 years (2004 – 2009) in South Africa as a master facilitator of the Brand Ambassador programme for Avis Corporation of Southern Africa and the Brand Champion programme for the Kelly Group and Transnet.

Ivan creates a fusion of humour, honesty, compassion and energy in his work, helping business professionals expand their ‘presence’, and communicate more effectively while developing their interpersonal relationship building skills.

In this workshop we aim to explore each individual’s creative space through voice and dance, following the thread of emotions and images and giving them expression.

We will work in studios, with time for individual work, and also out side, using inspiration from the countryside around. How are voice and movement affected by nature and the elements – for example down by the river, by the light of the sunset or in an ancient chapel? And how can we best integrate these influences in our own creativity?

Song interpretation means also freeing the material from any kind of preconceived standards. How to find a deep way towards your own interpretation will be the focus of this workshop, using both words and music as gateways towards your personal style of exploring the material, and including variation and improvisation.
We would like to find out how far wildness and tameness of your voice will produce a very personal and special version.
Besides physical preparation – especially for breath and sound – , daily work will comprise phrasing/rhythm, improvisational exercises and games, presence and performance.

Susanne and Anne will suggest a selection of jazz-related songs to work on, but you are welcome to bring your own (please get in touch with us beforehand).
*Jazz singer Anne Hartkamp has been in close touch with the Roy Hart Theatre work for 15 years, since her participation in her first seminars with Paul & Clara Silber. She is one of the better known singers on the German jazz scene with a number of CDs to her name, including some as a composer and band leader. Apart from her intense song interpretations, her trademark is a playful, instrumental and improvisational approach to the voice. In this workshop we will focus on connecting to who we are, through the voice, and also on the creation of our own music.
Beginning in the rich inner world, that everybody has within themselves we will explore and experiment with different ways of expression and musical form, trusting our intuitive competence, beyond virtuosity and style. Prior musical training is not required!
You will have the opportunity to explore what “music” means within your voice, and how to allow your own music to emerge.

The workshop will include physical and vocal preparation, individual lessons and group improvisation. We will move into new territory of our voices beyond the areas that we habitually use, and enjoy the pleasure of singing ourselves and singing together.

Roy Hart Voice Work is characterised by its non-judgemental way of exploring the voice as the phenomenon of human sounding. It has roots in the body, in movement and breathing, and also in the imagination, with its sense of structure in archetypes. We will explore this structure in detail, then use it in vocal improvisations and play.
You will be led along a creative path through these shared roots of the human voice, towards its branches and flowers found in the unique qualities of each individual voice, where the magic of speaking, singing, theatre and sound improvisations are to be found.
Many of the elements of The Human Voice workshops are included, as well as other elements drawn from the long research of RHT. Participants are encouraged to bring a memorised text and/or song with which to work.

Mornings :
— Physical preparation relating to breathing, energy and space, dramatic character of vocal imagination :
—Collective warm-up and intensive work on breathing : awareness of the physiology of breathing and the production of singing voice.
— The breath motor and heart of the voice.
— Vocal imagination through improvisation: voice and body theatrical exercises, exploration of sound, colours, and rythmical richness of the voice.

— Working with piano accompaniment – Singing lessons: individual and in small groups :
-— The voice, individual lessons
-— The dynamic process from breath to sound: speaking voice and singing voice.
-— Balance and posture.
-— Technique of the singing voice: vocalisation, legato, “ligna di canto,” developing register capacity, colour and dissonant harmonies.

Afternoon :

— Interpretation and stage work (individual) :
We will take the time to experience the stage – feel it with body and voice as a whole : — Personal interpretation of a song, or create a vocal score based on improvisation.

— Staging in relation to the cabaret world ( 4 days worck with pianist)
